The Old Bakers Cottage - Case Study

About The Old Bakers Cottage

Based in the charming village of Newborough, The Old Bakers Cottage is a vintage-style tea room and Bed & Breakfast at the heart of the village.

Run by a husband and wife team, with a 1950’s shabby chic theme, they specialise in themed afternoon teas and cream teas, all served on their huge collection of vintage china. Even the staff uniforms are influenced by the elegant rockabilly style of the 1950’s!

They also offer a light lunch menu including jacket potatoes, homemade soup, toasted sandwiches and a varied selection of homemade cakes including the owner Karen’s Mum’s famous apple pie! Gluten-free and vegan afternoon teas and lunches are available on request.

As well as the tea room, the couple also run a B&B from the same premises with the upstairs rooms adjoining the tea room. The bedrooms offer the same vintage styling and one of the two double rooms even boasts a full size grand piano!

Having renovated the outdoor space in order to offer customers a place to sit outside on sunny days, the garden is available for private hire for those special celebrations. For times when the good old British weather isn’t at its best, customers can also arrange exclusive use of the tea rooms. In addition, they also offer personalised birthday cakes, making it an ideal space for gathering with family and friends.

For local businesses requiring business lunches, this service is also available and all enquiries can be made by emailing info@theoldbakerscottage.co.uk

Karen explained: "I have collected vintage china for years, with a dream of opening a tearoom with a vintage feel and after being in an office based career, we bought The Old Bakers Cottage. After a complete overhaul, we opened our shabby chic tearoom in 2019. I have had the support of my family throughout – my husband, my Mum and my Sister travel from Birmingham every day to work in the tea room. It’s a truly family-run business that has that warm and cosy feeling."

When asked about their best selling products, Karen explained that their cakes are what they do best!: "The fabulous cakes are themed throughout the seasons and we offer a special selection during different holidays, alongside the customer favourites that are available all year round. The most popular cakes are the old school sprinkle cake, salted caramel, white chocolate and blueberry, as well as Mum's apple pie."

As well as attracting cyclists and walkers using the National Forest, they are also a local hub for the rural community and regularly host a popular ‘knit and natter’ group.

According to one customer: "The girls in the tea room are very friendly and it feels like we have known them forever! They really make the place sparkle and make the place what it is. They always have a big smile and that’s why I come here."

Getting such a personal service is what makes the tea rooms stand out from high street coffee shops. If you are visiting to celebrate a birthday for example, the staff will put a candle in the slice of cake and sing Happy Birthday to you! A personal service where everyone is made to feel welcome… even if you go in on your own, you certainly wont feel alone!

In order to celebrate Small Business Saturday, the team are offering a cream tea for £5 (served with your choice of tea or Americana coffee). Please call to book your table today on 01283 575303 or email info@theoldbakerscottage.co.uk
