Final consultation to be launched in the New Year on the Maltings development

East Staffordshire Borough Council is delighted to announce it plans to undertake a public consultation exercise in the New Year on the final concept plans for the Maltings development, ahead of progressing the regeneration of the Maltings site during 2023/24.

Building on previous consultation the Council has developed a number of concept sketches of how the new site could be regenerated. These sketches will be used to help people imagine how the site could be improved and what the local community in Uttoxeter think is important in the Town Centre.

Cllr George Allen, Leader of the Council, said: “The Maltings Precinct has remained unchanged for years with little to no investment from the private sector, which has led to it becoming a big eyesore in the Town Centre. It is now time for the Council to take the lead by initiating regeneration and investment here, but we need the public to help us with our concept plans and what comes next.

I have always said that we would listen and respond to the findings of the consultation that was completed last year and so I am pleased to announce that in any regeneration of the Maltings, the car park will keep the same number of spaces as is currently provided for and any new scheme will have a bus station within the site, close to the High Street like it is now.

As confirmed before there will also be no changes to the public toilets and there will be enough retail space to accommodate the current retailers who are active in the precinct, as well as opportunities for new commercial growth.

New Homes are an important part of any Town Centre Regeneration Scheme, but I will not compromise space for car parking, bus station and retail in exchange for housing; the character of the Town Centre needs to be protected.

The consultation will open towards the end of January 2023, running for 8 weeks and I would welcome as much feedback as possible throughout the process. There will be an opportunity to talk to the project team on several dates during the consultation so this will be a chance to find out more detail and to ask any questions of the team. Local residents have already positively shaped the concepts for the Maltings redevelopment, we now need your thoughts on the final concepts to take forward for delivery.”

Specific details on the dates for consultation and engagement events will be issued in January.
