Local Historians needed to help inform the development of new Burton Heritage Centre

Following the submission of the Burton Towns Fund programme to Government, East Staffordshire Borough Council is inviting local historians to help develop ideas for the new Heritage Centre proposal in Project D.

The proposal involves converting the Bass Town House on High Street, Burton, into a facility that celebrates and promotes the vast history of the town to residents and visitors. In order to achieve this, the Council is looking to enlist the support of residents who have local knowledge and expertise to create a community working group that will help to design the proposals for the Heritage Centre over the course of 2022/23, with a view to commence the works on the facility in 2023.

Councillor George Allen, Leader of the Council, said:

“This is an exciting time for the town as we look to create a new Heritage Centre in a significantly important town centre building. There are many different options for how this facility could be established and it’s imperative that this project is taken forward with insight from those who know the town best.

“When people think of Burton, they often think of the town’s brewing heritage, but there is much more to the town’s history and there are many more stories to tell. We want to create this working group to make sure that the Heritage Centre is community focused, based on the expertise of local Historians.”

The Council’s Enterprise Team can be contacted at enterprise.team@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk, expressions of interest should be submitted by 30th April 2022.

The delivery of the Heritage Centre is dependent on the outcome of the Towns Fund submission to Government and the creation of the community working group is in anticipation of a positive outcome.
